Been away for a week, I came back to my system and hear more. This only tells we are too easily getting accustomed to sound, without check and balance. I'm glad I found areas I should work on to rise the bar. First, the smearing. This is a difficult task to get rid of smearing entirely, we can only reduce it. By this, I don't mean to arrive at a studio-like, overdamped room. A dead room kills the music. This is against the thought of hearing only the direct sound that only possible with headphone. You guys listen to headphone know how it is like. Noise-free, only music. But, to me, without room reverberations, it doesn't sound like real music. What more, the soundstage sitting above the head.
Sidetracked, acoustics can work for you and work against you. This is a long journey, in my opinion, not your room correct software can remedy it. The software bends the sound, this is how they work. I found the bass lacks overall naturalness, power and authority comparably. So, what you are hearing in your room is the summation of direct and reflected sound. The million-dollar question is the golden ratio of direct sound and reflected sound, a mission I steadfastly pursue. In my definition, audioing is about managing acoustics. Unmanaged acoustics is not so good sound. And so, Shopee deliveryman delivered my no fancy absorptive panels yesterday, I was delighted with the results. Not overly absorptive panels, it reduces the smearing considerably but still retain rich reverberations.
Next up, the tweeter axis. This is super important. Changed my seating for this reason, I found there's still room for improvement. Again, thank you Shopee. With the modified lifters, this is a no brainer. Absolutely. I don't have measuring instruments to calibrate the sound, my only calibration tool I have with me is my hearing. I relate the sound to what I hear at the philharmonic hall, unconstrained, on a whim, lightness, powerful and rich overtones. What I take away from this exercise is how significant grounding effect onto the sound. Well-grounded electronics and speakers produce a powerful and anchored sound.
The last piece of puzzle to my system, wood diffusers. I got scammed for believing a tukang kayu who claimed can custom make my wood diffusers. It is quite difficult to find someone who is willing to take a small custom job. But I'm not giving up on it, I had engaged another tukang kayu to see if he can deliver next week. Adios.
